Did you know that headaches during pregnancy could trigger various symptoms apart from migraines? These symptoms have been associated with what causes headaches during pregnancy. For instance, many pregnant women experience swollen feet. This is a result of increased body weight as well as fluid retention. Other strange symptoms that accompany headaches during pregnancy include:

  1. Dental distress – it is not uncommon to find pregnant women with swollen gums. This is caused by a higher blood flow, alteration of progesterone and estrogen levels. The increased blood flow engorges the gums of the pregnant woman and cause heavy gum bleeding during flossing. In such a situation, it is important to pay your dentist a visit and heave your gums checked for gingivitis as well as gum inflammation.

During pregnancy, the gums can bleed even when you are not brushing your teeth. This is not only embarrassing but it is also a health risk. The earlier that this situation is arrested the better before it escalates into something more serious, such as periodontitis. This severe condition has been associated with what causes headaches during pregnancy and can cause preterm labor during birth. Periodontitis puts ligaments and joints at risk and it can open the floodgates of various complications such as low birth weight, stroke and many other complications during and after childbirth. In order to counter periodontitis, it is important to visit your dentist and have a thorough antibacterial mouth rinse.

  1. Nasal congestion, snoring and in some instances, nose bleeding are part of the package for most women who experience headaches during pregnancy. The lining of the nose is sensitive during pregnancy due to hormonal change and this causes the nose to swell. Swelling of the nose decreases air circulation within the nose and during the cold season, the lining of the nose experiences intense dryness. This can be treated through steaming, nasal saline drops as well as a humidifier. The good thing is that this condition disappears immediately after childbirth.
  2. Constipation and bloating – headaches during pregnancy are catalyzed by multiplication of progesterone which in turn stalls digestion. This can lead to constipation and other tummy complications that make it difficult for the gastrointestinal tract to pass stool. Thankfully, this condition can be treated using prenatal vitamins that increase the absorption of water in your body. In addition, intake of water can reduce constipation and bloating of the stomach. Focus on a diet that contains a higher percentage of fiber, fruits and veggies. Whole grains and fiber supplements such as Metamucil can make digestion an easy process and you can bid your tummy woes goodbye. Avoid laxatives at all costs as they activate bowel movements, which reduce hydration at a very high percentage. Laxatives might affect the absorption of nutrition and increase constipation.
